How Jets are big winners of Colts’ trade of Quenton Nelson to Seahawks

The New York Jets are not having a good season, especially after losing to the winless Miami Dolphins in Week 7. But a few days after their Sunday loss, the Jets got some good news.

While it had nothing to do with good injury news or an exciting roster move they made, it did involve a blockbuster trade. Except it was a move they weren’t a part of: Quenton Nelson getting traded by the Indianapolis Colts to the Seattle Seahawks.

At first glance, this might not seem like it has an impact on the Jets. But as ESPN’s Field Yates highlighted, this is actually a massive move for the Jets thanks to one reason: Last year’s Sauce Gardner trade.

Jets are big winners of Quenton Nelson trade between Colts, Seahawks

"A sneaky winner of the Quenton Nelson trade to Seattle? The Jets," Yates shared. "The Nelson trade could be the first of multiple trades the Colts make for their quality veteran players as they look towards the future. The Jets own Indy’s 2027 first-round pick."

The Colts trading away Nelson is likely the first of many trades they’ll make this season to ship off key players to contenders for draft capital. For the Colts, amid a lost season, it’s the right decision.

But the 2-5 Jets might benefit from the 2-5 Colts selling more than the teams getting the players, or the Colts getting the draft picks, will benefit.

Thanks to the Jets owning the Colts’ first-round pick, the Jets are well positioned to land a very high pick from Indianapolis. That’s even more the case if they continue to sell key players.

DeForest Buckner, Jonathan Taylor, Keenan Allen, Josh Downs, and many others could be traded by the Colts. If they conduct such a huge fire sale, it would not be a surprise if Indianapolis ended up with one of the worst records in the NFL.

With the Jets looking for their quarterback of the future, the Colts’ fire sale could give them a high pick to take a QB, or the likely very strong draft capital needed to trade up for one.

Darren Mougey’s trade of Gardner at last year’s trade deadline is looking more genius by the minute. After this Nelson trade, the Colts have confirmed their intention of being major sellers this season.

With that in mind, the Jets should be set to get a very high draft pick in the first-round from the Colts, as they could wind up with two picks inside the top-5 of the 2027 NFL Draft.
