Formula 1 could be on the verge of witnessing history.
Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix in Austin on Oct. 25, extending his championship lead and putting himself within touching distance of his first world title.
Now, the spotlight shifts to Mexico City. The question is no longer whether the Mercedes driver has championship potential. It is whether anyone can stop him from becoming the youngest Formula 1 world champion in history.
The Championship Is Antonelli’s to Lose
Antonelli leads the standings with 365 points, 123 ahead of teammate George Russell and 124 clear of Lewis Hamilton.
With only five rounds remaining after Austin, the mathematics are becoming increasingly difficult for his rivals.
The 20-year-old can clinch the championship at the Mexican Grand Prix on Nov. 1 by finishing ninth or better. He could also seal the title if neither Russell nor Hamilton wins the race.
That is an extraordinary position for a driver still in only his second Formula 1 season.
Antonelli has already won nine Grands Prix this year. His latest victory in Austin came after he started from pole position and finished more than 13 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc.
Who Can Actually Stop Him?
Russell and Hamilton remain the only drivers mathematically capable of catching Antonelli.
That is a remarkable development in a season that once featured a much wider championship conversation. Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and other contenders have been eliminated from title contention.
Antonelli’s advantage is substantial, but the championship is not officially over yet. A difficult weekend in Mexico could delay the celebrations.
Mercedes also has an opportunity to secure the constructors’ championship, adding another potential milestone to an already enormous weekend.
A New Era of Formula 1?
Hamilton became a global superstar by winning seven world championships. Verstappen built a dominant run of his own. Now, Antonelli is on the verge of announcing himself as the sport’s next defining champion.
Winning a title at 20 would be a historic achievement. Doing it in just his second season would make the accomplishment even more remarkable.
The Mexican Grand Prix could become a coronation — or the opening of one final chapter of suspense.
F1 fans, is Kimi Antonelli already the face of the sport’s future? Or does he need to win multiple championships before earning that label?
