Moulton, Florida broadcasting legend with Scranton ties, dies

October 28, 2026 · by SPW Pipeline

David Moulton became so revered in broadcast booths during an illustrious career, the 6-foot-4 Hall of Fame quarterback he worked with side-by-side for almost a decade fought back tears recalling his contributions Monday night.

A longtime spotter for major NFL and NCAA football broadcasts who also built an impressive résumé as a columnist and radio voice during a 40-year career in sports media that started in Scranton, died Saturday after a six-year battle with renal cell cancer.

Moulton graduated from the University of Scranton in the mid-1980s before embarking on a career that spanned the United States. He cut his teeth calling Royals men’s basketball games for WEJL, then worked briefly as an on-air personality at WYOU in Scranton before leaving the area.

“He was a fighter, right up until the end,” former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman said of Moulton, choking back tears in the midst of a tribute for his longtime spotter during the third quarter of the Monday Night Football game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Cowboys. “He left a hole in a lot of peoples’ hearts. Just a good man.”

He built a major following in southwest Florida, where he wrote a regular column for several newspapers. But Moulton was perhaps best known in and around the Fort Myers area as the voice of Florida Gulf Coast University athletics and the popular Miller and Moulton show, becoming an area legend alongside co-host Mark Miller.

It was his work behind the scenes that earned him nationwide attention at the time of his passing, though.

As his spotter since 2019, Moulton assisted Aikman by identifying players, tracking penalties and keeping tabs on key matchups that were important to the analyst as he prepared for the weekly broadcasts.

That is a behind-the-scenes role at which Moulton became one of the best in sports broadcasting. Play-by-play man Joe Buck, for whom Moulton worked as a spotter for golf broadcasts during their days at FOX Sports, called his work “brilliant” and “effortless.”

Moulton got his first job in that role in 2006, working alongside longtime color commentator Gary Danielson during his days calling college football games for CBS.

“He was great and helped make our broadcast better,” Danielson said in comments shared on X by current CBS sideline reporter Jenny Dell. “More importantly for me, David grew into being my most trusted friend. During our travels together, we talked about sports, but also so much more about life. I will miss him dearly.”
