The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Martinsville Speedway this Sunday for the Xfinity 500, a crucial race that could decide the 2026 championship before the season finale. With just two races remaining in the Chase, the pressure is mounting, and Kyle Larson arrives in Virginia with a commanding advantage after a dramatic victory at Talladega Superspeedway.
Larson’s latest win gave him a 73 point lead over Denny Hamlin, putting the defending champion in position to clinch his second consecutive title and third overall this weekend. However, Martinsville is a challenging short track where one mistake, a poor pit stop or a late race incident can quickly change the championship picture.
Larson Looks to Finish the Job
Larson has found his best form at the perfect time. After ending a lengthy winless drought earlier in the Chase, the Hendrick Motorsports driver has collected victories at Gateway, Kansas and Talladega to establish himself as the championship favorite.
His 73 point advantage means Larson can clinch the title by scoring 59 points at Martinsville, regardless of his rivals’ results. Still, he cannot afford to become complacent. His difficult finish at Phoenix earlier in the postseason demonstrated how quickly a strong points position can take a hit.
A clean race and another competitive performance would put Larson in excellent position to celebrate another championship.
Hamlin and Bell Need a Big Weekend
Hamlin enters Martinsville needing a major turnaround. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver trails Larson by 73 points and must make up substantial ground to keep his championship hopes alive heading into Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Christopher Bell faces an even tougher challenge, sitting 74 points behind Larson after a costly crash at Talladega. Both drivers need strong finishes, and a victory would provide a significant boost to their chances.
Chase Briscoe, Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney also remain among the drivers looking to make a late championship push, although their paths to the title are increasingly difficult.
Martinsville Could Deliver More Drama
The historic half-mile oval is known for tight racing, heavy braking and frequent contact. Drivers must protect their track position while managing tire wear and navigating traffic, particularly during restarts.
Pit strategy will be critical, and a late caution could create one final opportunity for challengers to steal the victory.
The Xfinity 500 is scheduled for Sunday, November 1, at 2 p.m. ET on NBC, with radio coverage from MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
With Larson on the verge of another championship, Martinsville could deliver a defining moment in the 2026 season. The challengers need a big result, while Larson has the opportunity to turn his points advantage into another title.
