Cowboys in Trade Talks to Land $76 Million Pass-Rush Star From NFC Rival
Josh Sweat and the Arizona Cardinals are having a poor start to the 2026 NFL season. The team recently lost their Week 7 matchup to the Denver Broncos with a score of 16-30. The franchise currently has just 2 wins and 5 losses so far this season.
The team is performing poorly, and it seems that Sweat wants to leave the mess. With the player’s desire made known, one franchise is interested in getting him.
Cowboys interested to trade Josh Sweat
The Dallas Cowboys have engaged in discussions with the Cardinals regarding a potential trade for Sweat, according to reporting from Evan Sidery. The edge rusher had signed a four-year, $76.4 million contract with Arizona in 2025 following a Super Bowl LIX title with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Arizona Cardinals linebacker Josh Sweat (10) walks off the field after their 31-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on Sept. 20, 2026.
He is now seeking a move out of Arizona since the Cardinals fired head coach Jonathan Gannon after the 2025 season. The player had delivered a career-high 12 sacks in his first season with the Cardinals. So far in the 2026 campaign, he has recorded two sacks and 16 combined tackles across seven games while Arizona sits near the bottom of the standings.
Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort previously said the team will not be trading the Sweat. He said, “There’s always a lot of talk that goes around that. We have no interest in trading Josh. We’re excited to have him, but some of those discussions are going to keep private, but excited to have Josh here. Had a great year last year. Excited for more good things out of him this year.”
Multiple league executives and insiders, including ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, have identified the Cowboys as a logical fit for Swear. Dallas ranks near the bottom of the NFL in sacks and pressures this season and has explored defensive reinforcements. Sweat remains under contract through 2028, providing multi-year control rather than a short-term rental. He also shares prior experience with Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker from their time together with the Eagles.
However, it is unclear what the conditions of the deal will be yet. But one person has added that there is a condition for a deal to happen.
Cowboys trade deal for Josh Sweat has one condition
NFL insider Adam Schefter recently appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show,” where he talked about the Cowboys potentially trading for Sweat. However, he added that there is a condition that needs to be fulfilled before that can happen.
He said, “The Dallas Cowboys, they’ve got to win some games here to bring in some talent. If they can win tonight, if they can find a way to win a couple of these games upcoming before the deadline, Josh Sweat would make some sense to me out in Arizona. I could see that being in play.” Currently, the Cowboys only have a 3-4 record, which could hamper a potential trade. Any trade deal will need to be completed before the November 10 trade deadline.
For now, Josh Sweat will have to focus on his next game with the Cardinals against the Dallas Cowboys instead.
