Aston Villa Threaten Legal Action Against Carragher For Comments

It’s difficult to be a good pundit in the current media landscape. Outrage gets the clicks, and there’s nothing more outrage inducing than someone talking absolute shite about your club, especially said person played for a rival club.

That said, despite occassional getting caught up in some media nonsense, Jamie Carragher is generally a pretty decent pundit. Regardless, the former Liverpool player got caught up in this one this week, and might need to call a lawyer if Aston Villa’s ownership is to be believed.

Villa are reportedly seeking legal action against Carragher for, as far as I can tell, speaking the truth about the Birmingham club and saying that Manchester United—the second biggest club in England—is a bigger club than them.

Carragher suggested as much on a podcast while responding to the rumors that Villa manager Unai Emery might be headed to Old Trafford.

“Take a player, if you’d won the Europa League three or four times surely you’ll then want to go for the Champions League. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United,” Carra correctly concluded.

“I just think he didn’t do well at PSG or Arsenal. Maybe that’s because of egos in the dressing room and that sort of thing.

“But surely he would want that opportunity to manage a giant again. There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not.”

When Villa fans got angry at him, he simply responded for them to fuck off.

Carra also preemptively made the controversy worse for himself by adding that Villa fans can “shut the fuck up” if they didn’t like this reality. Which is legitimately funny. Stupid, sure. But also funny.

Villa responded, “Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the Club and its fans. Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football.”

I’m not sure on what grounds they could win any sort of legal action, but good luck with that!
