Key matchups
Drew Petzing vs Brian Flores
Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores is perhaps the best-known coordinator working in the NFL today, not just for how effective his defenses in Minnesota have been since he joined the team in 2023, but for how he has made Minnesota’s defense so stout.
Put simply, Flores makes the Vikings blitz. A lot.
Heading into Minnesota’s Week 7 game against the Colts, the Vikings blitzed at a rate of 68.4%, which was more than 25% higher than the next-closest team (Washington Commanders, 42.5%). The blitz came even harder against the Colts, however, with the Vikings sending at least one extra pass rusher 89% of the time. That left just six plays that the Vikings didn’t blitz against Indianapolis, about the NFL average of plays on a single drive this season.
"[Flores] runs a system I don’t think a lot of people in the NFL run, so it’s not something you see four or five times a season and have a lot of evidence of how people attack him and what you need to do," Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing said before practice on Thursday, Oct. 29. "He does it all. He’s one of the best there is and he’s done it at a high level."
Petzing is also doing it at a high level in his first season in Detroit, with the Lions entering Week 8 sporting the best passing offense (282.3 yards per game) and the second-best scoring offense (30.7 points per game). And if Petzing can somehow get close to both of those numbers on Sunday, analysts might start talking about his offensive schemes in the same breath as Chicago Bears coach (and former Lions offensive coordinator) Ben Johnson’s.
Okay, maybe not really … but it would be an impressive showing for Petzing seven games into his Lions tenure, nonetheless.
Aidan Hutchinson vs Kyler Murray
After a slow start on the ground, Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray has gotten a bit more comfortable rushing, putting up 51 yards on 10 attempts in a Week 5 win against the New Orleans Saints and averaging 7.8 yards on five attempts in the Vikings’ win over the Colts on Sunday. That’s a sign of the old Murray, a former first-round pick who is fourth in total rushing yards among quarterbacks (3,325) since his rookie season in 2019 (behind Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson, Buffalo’s Josh Allen and Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts).
That’s going to be a challenge for Detroit’s pass rushers, especially Aidan Hutchinson, who will be tasked with helping keep Murray from escaping the pocket.
"He’s super-athletic," Hutchinson said. "There’s a lot of mobile quarterbacks in the NFL, but he’s one of the guys who’s more than mobile. He’s dangerous out in space."
Hutchinson had a season-high five quarterback hits against the Packers in Week 7 as Detroit’s edge pressure often rushed Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love into bad passes. And if the Lions want to keep Murray from getting the ball into the hands of star receiver Justin Jefferson, the defensive line keeping Murray from slipping out into space is step one.
Scouting report
Lions offense vs Vikings defense
Here’s a fun Jared Goff stat.
The Lions quarterback has 1,788 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and zero interceptions over his first six games. The only two quarterbacks with at least that number of passing yards, touchdowns and zero interceptions through their first six games are Aaron Rodgers in 2021 and Tom Brady in 2010. Both players won MVP that season.
Here’s another fun stat.
Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores has faced a top-two scoring offense five times while with Minnesota, going 3-2 in those games. Both of those losses came against the Lions.
You know who has a top-2 scoring offense right now? You guessed it – Detroit, whose 30.7 points per game ranks below only the Buffalo Bills (32.8).
That doesn’t necessarily mean that this edition of Detroit’s offense can tear through this edition of the Minnesota defense, however. The Vikings have allowed 12.3 points per game through the first six games, by far the lowest average in the NFL, as Flores’ blitz-heavy defense is looking as effective as ever.
"I think it’s just another year in this system for these guys that are veteran and they’re able to continue to evolve it and make it what it is," Goff said after practice on Wednesday. "At the same time, we have our answers and we’re going to be ready to go on Sunday.”
Lions defense vs Vikings offense
The Vikings offense averages 162.3 passing yards per game and 281.7 total yards per game, which both rank 29th in the NFL. But Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard isn’t paying attention to those stats.
"You can take those numbers and throw them out the window, because what they’re doing is what it takes to win," Sheppard said before practice on Thursday. "I know it hasn’t felt [that way] when you turn the tape on, but this is an explosive offense that can explode at any moment."
That explosiveness comes from three players in particular Lions fans should be familiar with – 10-year veteran running back Aaron Jones, former Lions tight end T.J. Hockenson and two-time All-Pro receiver Justin Jefferson. Sheppard called Jefferson one of the two best receivers in the league, and though he didn’t go into specifics about Detroit’s plan, you can bet it revolves around keeping Jefferson at bay.
That’s going to take a total team effort – from pass rushers putting quarterback Kyler Murray out of sync, to defensive backs sticking on Jefferson to linebackers providing support in the space in between. According to Sheppard, however, Detroit’s defense is looking more cohesive over the last couple of games, both ending up in wins.
"These players are starting to talk a lot more," Sheppard said. "The overall total understanding of these guys starting to play and merge together, gel together, and the trust factor I think is the biggest thing that you’re starting to see grow in games."
