Florida State fires Mike Norvell after Saturday’s Clemson loss

Florida State has made a change at head coach after Saturday’s 36-24 loss against Clemson.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, FSU has fired Mike Norvell. The decision follows a meeting of university leadership to discuss Norvell’s future. FSU is currently 3-5 through eight games.

The school will owe Norvell $50.3 million, subject to offset and mitigation, ESPN’s Pete Thamel said.

Norvell’s FSU tenure

Norvell was in his seventh season as the Seminoles’ head coach before he was let go on Sunday. He took over ahead of the 2020 season and had his best season in 2023 when they finished 13-1. The Seminoles just missed out on a College Football Playoff berth that year.

However, since then, the Seminoles have won only 10 games under Norvell. They finished 2-10 in 2024 before winning only five games last year. Before Norvell got fired, they weren’t even on pace to make a bowl game.

Rick Stockstill will be the interim head coach for the rest of the season as the Seminoles undergo a full search for Norvell’s replacement. Stockstill is an off-field assistant for the program.

The Seminoles will try to win their fourth game of the 2026 season next Saturday against the Boston College Eagles. Kickoff will be at noon ET.
