Luka Dončić drops 42 Points in win over Miami

LOS ANGELES — Luka Dončić had plenty to smile about Monday night, although he was not particularly interested in explaining one moment that nearly put a damper on an otherwise spectacular performance.

After leading the Lakers to a convincing 138-117 victory over the Miami Heat at Crypto.com Arena, Dončić offered to answer more questions during his postgame media availability. But when asked why he received a technical foul, Dončić jokingly stood up and walked away from the podium.

It was a fitting ending to another unforgettable night for Dončić, who apparently had no interest in discussing anything that might cost him a little extra money.

The Lakers, meanwhile, had plenty of reasons to celebrate.

Coming off a 131-125 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, highlighted by Dončić’s 45-point explosion, the Lakers completed an impressive back-to-back with another offensive showcase. The Lakers improved to 6-2 through their first eight games, responding emphatically to their disappointing loss against Golden State last week.

Dončić once again proved nearly impossible to contain, finishing with 42 points on 14-of-24 shooting, 13 assists, seven rebounds and two steals. He knocked down six three-pointers and controlled the game from virtually every area of the floor.

The performance was another reminder that when Dončić gets comfortable offensively, opposing defenses have very few answers.

He came out firing, scoring 16 points in the first quarter and immediately putting pressure on Miami’s defense. Whether operating out of the pick-and-roll, creating separation for step-back three-pointers or finding teammates with his trademark passing, Dončić dictated the tempo throughout the night.

The Heat struggled to find a defensive adjustment that could slow him down.

Miami entered Crypto.com Arena with a new-look roster led by Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, but the Lakers made sure the visitors spent most of the evening chasing the game. The Lakers continued to attack, move the basketball and punish defensive breakdowns.

By the end of the third quarter, the Lakers had already scored a season-high 111 points.

Their ball movement was particularly impressive. The Lakers finished with a season-high 39 assists, surpassing its previous season best by 10. The offensive performance was not simply about Dončić making difficult shots; it was about the entire team benefiting from the attention he commanded.

"We’re sharing the ball really well," Dončić said when discussing the team’s improved ball movement.

That approach was evident throughout the game, particularly with Austin Reaves enjoying another productive night.

Reaves finished with 27 points, two rebounds and five assists, shooting an efficient 10-of-15 from the field in 34 minutes. His ability to create offense independently while playing alongside Dončić continues to give the Lakers another reliable scoring option.

Walker Kessler also made a significant impact, particularly against Miami’s imposing frontcourt.

The big man recorded 15 points and 15 rebounds on 7-of-13 shooting, holding his own against Antetokounmpo and Adebayo. His activity on the offensive glass was especially valuable, giving the Lakers additional possessions and helping maintain its offensive momentum.

JJ Redick highlighted Kessler’s work on the glass after the game.

"I think yesterday he had five offensive rebounds, if I’m not mistaken. Tonight, he had four. I love that," Redick said.

Kessler recorded his 60th career double-double, extending his streak to three consecutive games with double-digit points and rebounds.

Sandro Mamukelashvili also provided a boost off the bench, contributing 13 points, three rebounds and four assists in 28 minutes. Ziaire Williams returned to action after missing three games with left foot soreness, finishing with nine points, two rebounds and two assists in 15 minutes.

While the Lakers’ offense was spectacular, their second-half defensive response was arguably just as important.

The Heat managed to score 42 points in the second quarter, exposing some of the defensive issues that have followed the Lakers early in the season. However, the Lakers responded after halftime, holding the Heat to just 45 points over the final two quarters.

Redick acknowledged that the defensive performance remains a work in progress but emphasized the importance of making adjustments.

"We know we have to keep getting better there. You have to be able to win games with your defense and not just with your offense. We challenged the guys at halftime," Redick said.

The response was exactly what the Lakers needed. They continued to generate offense while becoming considerably more disciplined defensively, eventually turning a competitive contest into a comfortable 21-point victory.

For Dončić, the latest performance was simply another chapter in an extraordinary offensive stretch.

Over his last five games, he has recorded 42, 45, 37, 41 and 52 points, averaging an incredible 43.4 points during that span. He has scored at least 40 points in four of those five appearances and has become the first Lakers player since Kobe Bryant in 2007 to score at least 20 points in the first half of five consecutive games.

Dončić also leads the NBA with four 40-point performances this season. His career total of 19 games with at least 40 points, 10 assists and five three-pointers is the most in NBA history.

His early-season numbers are equally remarkable: 38.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 8.1 assists per game while shooting 49.7% from the field, 42.7% from three-point range and 88.7% from the free-throw line.

When asked about his recent offensive tear, Dončić offered a characteristically straightforward response.

"Obviously when we win, it feels way better," he said.

That winning mentality was also evident when he discussed the importance of completing the back-to-back wins against Toronto and Miami after the loss to Golden State.

"Of course, yeah. We believe in ourselves. We go into every game thinking we can win the game. We’re going to fight till the end," Dončić explained.

His teammates certainly recognize what they are witnessing.

Williams was particularly impressed with Dončić’s ability to dominate without appearing to force anything offensively.

"It’s crazy. It’s unbelievable. Like the defensive mindset in me is always like, why are they not blitzing him, or why are they not doubling? Like, why are they just letting him just walk to his spot and just do whatever he wants out there?" Williams said.

"But they’re trying, you know. He just is that good, and he just makes it l
