Sophie Cunningham has 24/7 security as concerns over stalkers grow
Sophie Cunningham can be a polarizing figure, so while she enjoys making public appearances, she says she has taken steps for the sake of safety.
The WNBA free agent who played the last two years with the Indiana Fever said on her "No Hesitation" podcast that she is hiring round-the-clock security.
"I’ve hired security and they’re going to start traveling with me actually next week 24/7. So that’s a little different," she said. "It kind of stops you from your regular routine."
An Indianapolis man is being held at Marion County Jail on charges of stalking Cunningham. In 2025, a Texas man pled guilty to stalking the Fever’s Caitlin Clark.
Co-host Drew Hanlen mentioned that federal authorities have been involved because Cunningham has about 20 stalkers, though she didn’t directly respond to that number.
Cunningham has had a busy offseason schedule, attending Formula 1’s U.S. Grand Prix, a NASCAR Cup race, a taping of "Dancing with the Stars," and appearing on Theo Von’s popular podcast. She is scheduled to sign autographs at the upcoming Chicago Sports Spectacular.
She said she plays off the haters as much as possible but recognizes it can go overboard.
"I’m still a dweeb, but I think you know that," she said. "All these people who are so unhappy or just, honestly, psychotic that are so mean and have so much hatred in their heart, and if you want to take it out on me, fine. I’m the one who can handle it.
"Now it doesn’t matter what state, what city, it’s everywhere."
Cunningham’s profile grew when she revealed her thoughts on transgender athletes. That provided her a bigger fan base as well as more detractors.
