‘Like we are all very stupid people who don’t remember the past’: Dave Portnoy takes a shot at Tom Brady

Tom Brady is returning to Foxborough on Sunday, this time as a Fox broadcaster for the Patriots’ game against the Packers. While it will be a major homecoming for Brady, who spent two decades leading the Patriots dynasty, not everyone in New England seems thrilled about it.

When Mike Vrabel was asked about seeing his old teammate, he made it sound more like an obligation than a reunion, though whether he was serious is up for debate. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, however, took the opportunity to take a pretty clear shot at Brady.

‘I’m required contractually to catch up with him’

During his press conference on Wednesday, Vrabel was asked about Brady’s return to Foxborough, and he gave what seemed like a pretty playful answer.

“I’m required contractually to catch up with him at some point. I’m sure it’ll be a Zoom. I’m sure they won’t show up here. I’m sure it will be Zoom. So, yep, that’s contractually I’ll be talking to him. And I’m sure I’ll see him at Gronk’s induction on Saturday,” Vrabel said, via the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed.

Broadcast crews typically hold production meetings with each team’s coaches before a game, which is the “contractual” obligation Vrabel was referring to.

However, it’s worth noting that Vrabel was likely joking. He and Brady won three Super Bowls together in New England, and Vrabel has a long history of giving his former quarterback a hard time.

‘We are all very stupid people’

While there’s a good chance that Vrabel was joking, Portnoy seemed to take it very seriously. The Barstool Sports founder said Vrabel’s comments captured exactly how he felt about the buildup to Brady’s return.

“This is exactly how I felt when I saw the hype video of Tom returning to NE like we are all very stupid people who dont remember the past,” Portnoy wrote on X.

Fox released a promo earlier this week hyping Brady’s first broadcast at Gillette Stadium.

For what it’s worth, Brady sounded excited about the trip. Speaking on The Herd on Tuesday, he said, “It’ll be certainly emotional,” and he praised the Patriots as an organization that “just always seem to do things the right way.”

But for some Patriots fans, there’s still lingering frustration with how Brady’s tenure ended. He left for Tampa Bay in 2020, won a Super Bowl there in his first season, and later admitted he wasn’t rooting for the Patriots in Super Bowl LX, according to Awful Announcing.

Portnoy clearly hasn’t forgotten. And based on Vrabel’s tone, the Patriots coach might not be rolling out the red carpet either.
