NFL insider provides major update to Jonathan Taylor trade talk

As the NFL trade deadline nears, the Indianapolis Colts still haven’t decided the fate of superstar running back Jonathan Taylor, but the lines have been open. Although a trade isn’t guaranteed, the opportunity makes sense, as the organization is aiming for a rebuild, and an RB with Taylor’s skill set could bring back some essential pieces for the roster.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, the teams that have expressed interest in trading for Taylor include the Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and New York Giants, sources said.

Recently, ESPN’s Stephen Holder reported that the Colts were offered a package that included a second-round pick and a later-round pick for Taylor, according to a source. But Holder noted that Taylor is “the team’s best remaining asset,” and the Colts reportedly want a deal that mirrors the one that sent RB Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers. The Carolina Panthers traded McCaffrey to the 49ers in 2022 for a pick each in the second, third, fourth, and fifth rounds, which played out to be more than a steal.

Thursday morning, Rapoport took to NFL Network’s Good Morning Football to provide an update on the “Taylor sweepstakes.”

“Where we are at is essentially where we have been,” Rapoport said. “Which is several teams interested in Taylor, willing to offer a significant pick package, but maybe not quite what Ed Dodds, who is running personnel now in place of Chris Ballard, who was fired, wants and what the organization wants; they want a Christian McCaffrey-type package for Jonathan Taylor.

“It’s clear they don’t have it; otherwise, they would have obviously made the trade. The other part of this thing is that this is someone they don’t really want to trade. This is someone they believe is a big part of their future; they’d like to build around him, so it would take a big package to get the Colts to move on from him.”

Taylor is the second-leading rusher in Colts history with 8,208 yards, trailing only Hall of Famer Edgerrin James (9,226), and he leads the franchise with 77 rushing touchdowns. This season, he has already rushed for 610 yards and leads the team with eight touchdowns.

While the Colts look to remain firm on any Taylor trade conversations, Rapoport also mentioned the possibility of WR Josh Downs, who requested a trade, being shipped off, as several teams need a receiver and the price would be significantly lower.
